Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort was famously described by Kipling as the work of angels and giants. An enduring symbol of Jaipur, the fort is perched 400 feet over the city, is enclosed by imposing thick walls and has numerous palaces with sprawling courtyards and fine carvings, within its confines.

The fort is uninhabited and its paths are trodden only by visitors who come to see the magnificent temples and palaces within its high crenellated walls. The Mehrangarh Fort was restored to its pristine glory in 1972 by the current descendant of the royal family, after lying derelict for years.

The foundation of the fort was laid by Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur, in 1459. The name of the fort literally means Sun Fort (Mihir – Sun and Garh – Fort). The Meherangarh Fort, like all buildings going back in time, has numerous legends and myths associated with it, that add to its aura.

The fort can be visited daily during summer from 8.30am-5.30pm and winter from 9am-5pm.  The Rs250 entry ticket includes an audio tour if you leave ID as deposit; additional charges are Rs50 for camera, Rs200 video and Rs15 for the elevator.
